Normally there is no clear distinction by colour between
sapwood and heartwood. It is pale brown to reddish brown and a deep reddish
brown when steamed. Typically straight grained with a fine, even texture. |

Working Properties: |
|
Beech varies somewhat in ease of working and machining according to growth
characteristics. On the whole, however, works fairly readily and is capable
of a good, smooth surface. Takes glue readily, stains and polishes
satisfactorily. |

Although it dries rapidly and fairly well beech has a
tendency to warp, twist, check and split and shrink considerably. |
