Beech, European
Fagus sylvatica

Density: 627kg/m3

Description: Normally there is no clear distinction by colour between sapwood and heartwood. It is pale brown to reddish brown and a deep reddish brown when steamed. Typically straight grained with a fine, even texture.
Working Properties: Beech varies somewhat in ease of working and machining according to growth characteristics. On the whole, however, works fairly readily and is capable of a good, smooth surface. Takes glue readily, stains and polishes satisfactorily.
Physical Properties: Although it dries rapidly and fairly well beech has a tendency to warp, twist, check and split and shrink considerably.
Durability: Perishable.
Main Uses: Good for turning and makes excellent veneer. Often used for handles and mallet heads.
