The heartwood varies between light pinkish to deep reddish shades. The
yellowish sapwood is not clearly demarcated. The grain is usually
interlocked and coarse.
Working Properties:
Generally easy to work, having a tendency to pick
up on the interlocking grain. Can be glued satisfactorily. Takes a high
polish.
Physical Properties:
African Mahogany covers many species in the khaya family. Some
can be light, work easily and dry well. The heaver species are more
difficult to work and when dried may distort and split.
Durability:
Moderately
durable.
Main Uses:
Used for furniture high quality joinery, boat planking,
banisters and handrails.
