Thorogood Timbers American Black Walnut is second to none. We only deal in ex-veneer grade logs form the celebrated Horizon mill in the Allegheny National park, a supplier who shares our values of excellence. Through-and-through cut, our walnut offers unparalleled choice when marking out to make cuts, allowing for selection of quartered, rift and plain timber according to your needs. Additionally, our well-conditioned boards offer greater stability, with fewer drying defects, whilst a gentle steam softens the sharp delineation between the sap and heartwood. Every board is individually marked, so if colour consistency is a requirement, we can make sure that every piece you receive is from the same log. It’s no idle boast to say it really is the best you can get.
Occurring naturally across the eastern USA, this tall, straight tree produces strong, durable timber with a rich and lustrous colour that sits beautifully alongside its characteristic grain. Popular with woodworkers for its workability and good steam bending classification, walnut boasts light brown to dark chocolate brown heartwood, occasionally with darker streaks. While its grain is generally straight, highly sought after attractive grain can occur. All in all, this is one of the best species for high end design.
American Black Walnut is known for being easy to work, especially with a straighter grain. The wood has good dimensional stability and can be worked well with hand and machine tools. It also nails, screws and glues well and can be stained easily and polished to an exceptional finish, although it looks beautiful both oiled and unoiled.
Walnut is a tough and hard timber that is both durable and long-lasting, making it the perfect choice for top of the range luxury furniture and joinery. Its medium density, moderate bending and crushing strengths, and low stiffness all contribute to its excellent workability and it has a good steam bending classification. Its rich colour, unique grain, and medium texture are topped off by a beautiful natural lustre.
American Black Walnut is one of the most durable woods available, extremely resistant to heartwood decay.
The average tree size is 100-120 ft (30-37 m) tall with a 2-3 ft (.6-1 m) trunk diameter.
